Area51 Project Foreman - 2024 Update

Torbay ATV Rip and Grouse Attack! January 20, 2024  Early winter rip leaving from the house, fair bit of snow in places but nothing that Project Foreman couldn't handle!

Adapt and Overcome Torbay Snow Run March 17, 2024 Originally planned to take the Argo our for a rip while the tracks were on, but on track left the chat early into the adventure. Regrouped and loaded my gear aboard Project Foreman and headed back out on the trails for a ride and end of winter boil-up.

One of my pics from that ride caught the attention of Facebook group NLATV who displayed Project Foreman as the groups temporary cover photo! It was a neat snap of spring arriving like a freight train!

Bay Roberts Tribute Ride with Dad April 22, 2024 This day I headed out to Bay Roberts for a ride into camp with Dad to place a memorial for his late friend Kevin King.

May 24th Holiday Weekend May 18-20, 2024 After getting some work done at the Rod and Gun Club, I unloaded Project Foreman and headed into the country on back of the Club property for some scouting and trouting. The bike continues to run well and look great doing so!

On October 22nd I loaded up the bike and headed down the Southern Shore near Aquaforte to check out some recent improvements to the Southern Shore Trailway which is always a great ride.

On the 26th of October I left from the house to check out the trails in Torbay after recent heavy rains.

While washing the bike after my two October 2024 rides I did a quick inspection of the wheel & swing arm bearings, while everything out back was great I was surprised to find both front wheel bearings very worn out.

They were last replaced in 2022, at that time I found the knuckles to be worn out of spec as the new bearings dropped in place with zero resistance. I attempted a repair using Locktite bearing/sleeve retainer which didn't seem to work.

Once the wheel bearings starts to fail it will not run true. This means the seals can no longer seal as the axle wants to rotate out of round so water gets in, fries the grease and it gets rapidly worse in short order.

With the old parts removed and everything cleaned up I set the knuckle in my bench vice and started peening the surface with a pointed chisel and hammer.

From what I've read the peened surface usually doesn't work for very long, but I hope when combined with the Locktite bearing/sleeve retainer it just might do the trick as new knuckles while available are on backorder with no estimated delivery date.

I always fill the gap between the front and back seals & the bearing with grease. Once the seals start to wear there will be no space for water to hold up which will help extend the life of the bearing a little bit.

Brake callipers cleaned and serviced.

Next it was onto an engine intake & exhaust valve check and adjustment as the last one was done way back in 2019 when I had the plastics off the bike to install the moonshine harvest moon wrap.

The spark plug was about three years old so it was replaced for good measure.

I inspected the differential oil and it was a little cloudy and two years old so both front and rear diff's received fresh 75w90 synthetic gear oil.

Finally my 2024 maintenance & repairs were wrapped up with an engine oil & filter change. I was stoked to see my preferred oil Maxima full synthetic back in stock at Honda One.

It's may be overkill, but its not much more expensive than Honda GN4 which is already pricey. Foreman's are geared low so it's not uncommon to run at the top of 5th gear on good trails, or get into the revs in deep mud etc, good oil has been cheap insurance for the motor over the last 26 years!

Cheers, MIKE
