October 26, 2024: Torbay Post Rainstorm ATV Ride (22 Photos) |
Yesterday we had a significant rain event here on the Avalon. While the South Coast of our province received the brunt of the storm, we still saw 35-45mm of rain fall in a relatively short period of time. I hopped on Project Foreman to check out the trails leaving from our house in Torbay
This comparison pic from my last ride back in August clearly shows the two extremes, unusually wet and unusually dry.
I was pleasantly surprised to see some great work done by the town of Torbay near the Bypass Highway @ Indian Meal Line. They installed a walking trail here which is well blocked off from ATV's to keep walkers safe. However, they have improved the parallel ATV path by backfilling the deep mud hole near the bottom of the hill with 4" stone!
This will keep riders dry and unmotivated/not needing to ride on the new walking path, great work Town of Torbay!
Neighbourhoods are ever expanding in our town. Its been awhile since I came down this way in the area of Forest Landing I found two new streets have encroached further onto paths we used to ride. These were not here on my last trip, particularly an extension to Cedarwood Lane and brand new Tanglewood Lane.
Thankfully with recent changes to the Off Road Vehicle Act we can legally ride on roads & highways up to 1km between trails provided you have a valid drivers license, the machine is insured and you ride the shoulder at 20kp/h.
This path is really grown in, and with the expanded housing development it will likely never be used again.
Amazingly this whole area near the end of the runway was completely void of water back in August, now it and the wetland next to it are back to normal and fully afloat.
All in all a quick, beautiful rip through one of my favourite areas to ride.
Cheers, MIKE
