September 21, 2025: Fall Berry Picking (12 Photos) |
|
After a very busy summer and fresh off a beautiful Caribbean Cruise vacation I was well rested and ready to get back out in the woods! Today I headed out on a solo adventure to try and snag a couple containers of late (for this year) season blueberries. From earlier checks I found all berries on the bushes are ripe but some are already going soft due to age and/or insect damage.
I decided to make it a simple, easy, economical adventure today leaving my ATV and Argo at home. Instead I opted for a quick walk up the pole line behind the Rod and Gun Club where blueberry yields are usually pretty decent.
Although we've had epic temperatures all summer for growing, the lack of rain was sure evident on the berry bushes as they were not overly plentiful compared to past seasons.
However after some poking around in some low lying areas were moisture held up better I was able to fill two one gallon containers in a reasonable amount of time.
With two containers full I decided to head down the Southern Shore in search of some black berries to make my Ultimate Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich. I stopped to Tim Horton's on Witless Bay Line for a coffee and sandwich for an easy on the road lunch.
Our 2020 Murano Platinum still continues to run very well, is a pleasure to drive. As a welcome change, it burns about half the fuel as my 2500HD pickup which is great for adventures like this.
Once again, our lack of rain certainly took its toll on yield, but I covered a lot of ground and managed to fill about half a container of delicious natural black berries.
It was an absolutely beautiful day in the woods, on the way home I stopped in to our moose hunting area to check on a couple game cameras. I was pleasantly surprised to see water had finally returned to this little stream which was bone dry just a month ago.
All in all not a bad day's work!
Cheers, MIKE
