February14-16, 2024: Valentine's Blizzard (19 Photos) |
This week winter really kicked up a notch as we were forecasted to receive 50cm snow accompanied by high winds. This was set to begin early on Valentines Day lasting into the following day. Snow started early in the morning which closed most everything in the city before it even opened.
Snow day breakfast of champions for Sandra and I!
Most of the snowfall finished up around midnight but high winds kept it blowing and drifting in very heavy. Tomorrow will be a snow clearing workout for sure.
Thursday morning we awoke to discover that temperatures went mild overnight and actually rained for a bit, turning 50cm of dense wind driven snow into a wet, heavy, dense mess.
Most businesses closed for a second day in a row as the city dug out from this arduous snowfall.
My trusty Honda 9/28 certainly earned its keep today, it was a job to push through with the initial cut. The snow was so dense and heavy even the thin edges of the bucket had a hard time breaking their way through.
The density was perfect for using a tracked Honda blower as they are designed. Riding up on the snow, taking off the top layer and coming back for the bottom layer in the next pass. Works great and negates the need for a taller bucket or drift cutters.
Yup, that's a problem for another day!
After getting myself cleared out, I headed to Doug's house to replace a broken Impeller shaft shear bolt on his Honda Blower, then over to another buddies house to diagnose no drive to the tracks on his new/used unit. That repair can be found on My Misc Projects in the Shed 2024 page.
Snow squalls continued Thursday night into Friday, dropping an additional 15cm of thankfully light powder.
Soon time to dig out the trailer for some winter snowmobile & Argo adventures!
Cheers, MIKE
