May 15, 2023: Trouting Opening Day (12 Photos)

Winter trouting closed just a short four weeks ago on April 15th, however the wait for summer trouting to open seemed like an eternity! Thankfully as of today trouting of most inland waters are open once again here in Newfoundland.

This year opening day fell on a Monday. I was fortunate enough to get away for a couple hours in the morning and wet a line in an area I never fished before near Salmonier Line.

The weather today was beautiful with clear sunny skies, low double digit temperatures, however it was quite windy which made fly casting a challenge.

My go to trouting setup is my Loop Q series, it's a 9' long 7wt rod which is a little overkill for trouting but I haven't yet invested in a 5 or 6wt dedicated trouting setup.

I fished two beautiful small gullies, water was top high due to spring runoff, getting around the edges was difficult with just rubber boots on.

Looks like a resident Beaver has been hard at work!

Today's adventure wasn't a long or successful one, I got a late start and the wind certainly added a level of difficulty to the trip. With that said it was great to get out on the country, do a little walking, casting, and scouting for a potential future adventure.

Cheers, MIKE
