April 10, 2022: Avalon Late Winter Trouting (14 Photos)
The winter trouting season is coming to a close very soon on the 15th of this month, today I met up with Terry Slaney and Greg Hill for a few flicks trying for sea trout in Marysvale.
The weather was great with no wind and typical April cool temperatures.
With no success in Marysvale Greg headed back to town while Slaney and I headed further up the shore to South River for another flick.
After a similar run of luck in South River, Slaney headed for home hoping to meet up later in the Goulds.
Meanwhile I opted to take a run in the power line road on Witless Bay Line for another flick and a boil up before heading home to Torbay. Here I swapped my fly rod for my trusty spin cast as I didn't see any trout rising for natural or artificial flies.
I put my Georgecraft Damascus Steel axe and Kelly Kettle to work just as it started to peck rain, earlier than was forecasted of course!
Fresh brewed coffee was a breeze with my GSI Commuter coffee press. You spoon coffee into the cup, add boiling water, stir, rest then press the filter down. Leaving the filter in place add your preference of milk/cream/sugar/sweetener, screw on the lid and drink up!
Rain arrived with fury so I put away my trouting gear and retreated to the truck for a quick dirty warm up lunch. I decided to forego frying moose sausages in the rain and opted to simply add boiling water to a freeze dried meal ready to eat.
It was actually pretty tasty, and certainly easy in these rapidly deteriorating weather conditions.
The rain never did let up so we didn't meet up in the Goulds as planned. All in all, still not a bad way to finish out what has been a truly strange season of winter trouting.
Cheers, MIKE
